Wind on the Water
Situated on a historic, abandoned lighthouse in the middle of the Detroit River, this tiny house sits between the US and Canadian borders. In the time of quarantine and border closures, Tiny (light) House is a refuge for families and friends unable to officially cross to see each other. Isolated on the river, this tiny light house must fend for itself to protect the structure from harsh winters and winds, and sustain itself by recycling water and growing fresh food onsite. The prefabricated CLT structure has southern apertures to capture solar gains (glass operable windows with protective removable storm windows); the west side is protected from strong winds, rains, and waves by a canvas skirt structure. The skirt enables the socializing space to flow outside in most seasons and allows people to celebrate the 360 degree water views. On the river, this tiny house hosts reunions, conversations, and cross cultural exchanges that flow freely from its little light.
Project completed in a team of three.
