Lyse Messmer
Lyse works across disciplines to design and support projects that create resilient and equitable communities in the face of climate change and associated disasters. In 2021, she graduated with her Masters of Architecture from University of Michigan where she was the 2019 Albert Kahn fellow. She received a student award for her project, “Certain Futures” which addressed climate change resilient building methods at the community scale. After graduation, she gained architectural experience working on affordable housing and education projects in Los Angeles. In 2024, she began working independently designing housing using passive cooling systems and sustainable materials.
Prior to studying architecture, Lyse was a 2013 Challenge Detroit fellow and worked in Detroit as a graphic designer and community engagement consultant. She worked with Detroit Future City, Coalition on Temporary Shelter, The Detroit Riverfront Conservancy, Focus:Hope, and others to support equitable community development and blue/green infrastructure projects in Detroit. She studied visual arts and urban planning in undergrad, and still maintains that walking is the best way to understand place.
She has been a guest lecturer at University of Southern California and a guest reviewer at Lawrence Technological University and University of Michigan. Lyse lives in Mount Washington, Los Angeles, where she enjoys uncovering bits of urban history on walks around her neighborhood.
